Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Major Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.

Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming appeal.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about following this charming family navigate their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its current layer of irony. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to experience the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
