Russell Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Quarterback Remarks

NY Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this week, responding to recent comments from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared via social media. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."

Wilson's response pointed to the notorious Bounty Gate issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the Saints.

During that period, the NFL found that the Saints had incentivized players for delivering hard hits on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the NFL for one season.

The Cause of the Latest Dispute

The quarterback's response came after Payton made comments following the Broncos' remarkable 33-32 win over the New York. Payton remarked that the team had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Moreover, Payton hinted that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson instead of Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened well after our game,'" Payton stated.

Background of the Wilson-Payton Relationship

  • Wilson joined the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245M contract.
  • The Broncos went 4-11 in his first season prior to the team hired Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a stint in broadcasting.
  • The coach benched Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a decision that ensured the player from suffering an injury.

If Wilson remained on the roster by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for 2025 would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was released, ending the ugly split between the player and his coach.
