The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror That Blends Silent Hill with Among Us Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a girl containing several personalities within her must escape from a maze of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Within her reside four separate souls, all possessing unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can take over at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can activate something primal within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to every individual."
The core gameplay loop revolves around controlling the persona that emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will switch involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist in succession. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous blooms growing from their heads should be. Flowers are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four souls claims that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
After a player believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The last one standing might be a fake. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is can be follow on platforms.
