For much of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive inside a mental fortress forged from the recollections of the villain Henry. Their quest for a way out in the pivotal sixth episode forces them to experience a life-altering moment from Henry's youth—an event that could contain the means to overcome him once and for all.

Spoiler Warning: The following contains major spoilers for *Stranger Things* season 5, volume 2.

The Discovery in the Cavern

Upon meeting Max in the world called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a cave that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the true terror lies beyond the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.

There, they witness a Henry as a boy find an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly wonders aloud. It was a factor, but the trauma went deeper than a fight for life.

Similar to other plot points of the final season, the significance of the encounter was first explored the stage play The First Shadow.

The Philadelphia Experiment and A Spy's Mission

*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which transported a vessel into a plane dubbed the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who returned in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this experiment in Nevada. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to sell to the Communist spies, who were keen to start their parallel research. The man in the cavern was that very thief.

So, What's in the Case?

Given what is revealed about his research, the briefcase would assuredly have samples of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, which triggered the awakening of his powers—traits he would genetically impart to the children Brenner would experiment on.

A second theory, the container could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy was transported in the Abyss, returning after half a day as a different person. From then on, he fights the whispers of a sinister presence, similar to how Will was possessed by the Mind Flayer in season 2.

The Power of Fear

Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine shows how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. While he controls the Hive Mind and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to become stronger.

Will's growth has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Furthermore, Will now is aware of what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a critical advantage in the endgame conflict ahead.
