The Reasons the Duke of York is Giving Up His Official Honors – and What It Means for the Royal Family
Through a statement issued by Buckingham Palace, Prince Andrew has confirmed that he will be giving up his royal titles, including his dukedom. Below is an overview of what has been revealed – and what remains unchanged.
What Has the Prince Said?
Having already stepped down as a working royal in 2019, Andrew has currently chosen to “go a step further” and agree to refrain from using the “title or the honours which have been conferred upon” him.
However, he used the statement to emphatically denying – as he has always done – the accusations of sexual impropriety made against him; even though after settling millions to settle the civil sexual assault case filed by Virginia Giuffre – an agreement in which he accepted no fault and strongly rejected all allegations of wrongdoing.
There has existed persistent pressure toward the royal institution regarding the claims against Andrew – especially since his ill-fated television appearance with Emily Maitlis in 2019. He now claims he is acting to protect his relatives from additional harm caused by public speculation.
Has the King Stripped Him of His Honors?
Not at all. And, while this could be dismissed as a simple procedure, it is significant in multiple ways: first, it enables the prince to publicly claim to have behaved with integrity in defence of the monarchy. As he said in his statement: “I have decided, consistent with my past, to prioritize my obligations to my relatives and the nation first.”
Second, although he consented not to use it, the prince keeps his ducal title, as well as the titles the Earl of Inverness and his barony and the esteemed position as Royal Knight Companion of the prestigious order. Similar to the His Royal Highness title, they are effectively dormant.
He continues to be a prince and eighth in the line of succession. Theoretically, he remains still a counsellor of state – and can stand in for the sovereign should he be abroad or ill. Although royal officials has indicated that, in practice, he will not be asked to fulfil this role.
Nevertheless, it is telling that the prince's announcement said the decision was made “following talks with the monarch”. There seems little doubt that, privately, the royal household advocated for this in the hope of distancing the institution from Andrew.
Why Was He Not Formally Stripped of His Entire Honors?
To forcibly remove a ducal title would require an act of parliament, and would represent such a historic move publicly before the public – it has not occurred to a senior royal in over a century – that it could cause more reputational damage for the monarchy.
Andrew is also a royal by birth. When he was born in 1960, he was automatically as the child of the sovereign. This would only be altered if a letters patent was enacted by the reigning monarch.
The entire procedure might ultimately being protracted, meaning the objective of quickly addressing the issue – at least for the monarchy's interests – would not necessarily be achieved.

What Was the Reaction?
While he said Giuffre had been “vindicated” by the decision, her sibling Sky Roberts informed a newspaper that the prince's style ought to be removed for “true justice” to be achieved.
The anti-monarchist advocacy organization Republic has also said the move is “insufficient and delayed”, noting: “The prince continues to be accused of sexual offences and abuse of office. He should be divested of all titles and his navy rank and should face a legal probe. Refraining from using archaic honors is not a punishment that fits the offences.”
